How to Remove Mould From Your Bathroom (and Keep It Away for Good)

Black mould in bathrooms is one of the most common household problems in the UK — and one of the most misunderstood. Most people wipe it off and hope for the best. It always comes back.

Health Warning

Prolonged exposure to black mould (Stachybotrys chartarum) can cause respiratory problems, allergies, skin irritation, and more serious health issues — especially in children, the elderly, and people with asthma. Don't ignore it.

What Causes Bathroom Mould?

Mould thrives in warm, humid environments with poor airflow. Your bathroom after a shower is the perfect breeding ground. Common causes include:

  • Inadequate ventilation (no extractor fan, or fan not used enough)
  • Condensation on cold walls and windows
  • Leaking pipes or tiles with poor sealant
  • Damp towels and clothes left in the bathroom
  • Old or damaged grouting that traps moisture

DIY Mould Removal: What Actually Works

For minor surface mould, a DIY approach can help as a short-term measure:

  • 1. Protect yourself

Wear rubber gloves, goggles, and a face mask. Never touch mould directly.

  • 2. Use the right product

HG Mould Spray or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water). Avoid vinegar — it's not effective on black mould.

  • 3. Apply and leave

Spray generously, leave for 15–20 minutes. Don't wipe immediately.

  • 4. Scrub the grouting

Use an old toothbrush or grout brush. Light wiping won't remove embedded mould spores.

  • 5. Rinse and dry thoroughly

Leaving moisture behind will just restart the cycle.

How to Prevent Mould Coming Back

  • Run the extractor fan during and for 20 minutes after every shower
  • Open a window whenever possible after bathing
  • Wipe down tiles and the shower screen after use
  • Fix any dripping taps or leaking sealant immediately
  • Apply anti-mould sealant around baths and showers annually
  • Consider a dehumidifier if your bathroom has no window
