Why DBS Checks Matter When Hiring a Cleaning Company
When you hire a cleaner, you're inviting someone into your home — often unsupervised. A DBS check is one of the most important things you should verify before letting anyone through your door.
At J&M Cleaning UK: Every single team member holds a current DBS certificate. We carry physical copies on every job. You can ask to see it at any time — no exceptions.
What Is a DBS Check?
A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is an official UK government background check. It reveals whether an individual has any criminal record, cautions, reprimands, or warnings held on the Police National Computer.
There are three levels:
Basic DBS
Shows unspent convictions only. The minimum standard.
Standard DBS
Shows spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings.
Enhanced DBS
The highest level — includes additional police information. Required for roles working with children or vulnerable adults.
Why It Matters for Domestic Cleaners
Cleaners often work alone in your home, with access to your belongings, valuables, and personal space. A DBS check doesn't guarantee perfect behaviour, but it does mean:
- The individual has been formally vetted by the UK government
- Any serious criminal history would have been disclosed to the employer
- You can verify the check and know who is entering your home
Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Cleaner
- – Are all your cleaners DBS checked? (Not just the company — every individual)
- – Can I see a copy of the certificate?
- – Are they employed directly or through a third-party agency?
- – Are they covered by public liability insurance?
- – Have they cleaned in this area before and can they provide references?
