After-Build Cleaning Checklist: What to Expect After a Renovation

Post-construction cleaning is one of the most labour-intensive types of clean. Builder's dust is fine, heavy, and gets absolutely everywhere — including inside drawers, behind radiators, and in places you'd never think to look.

Why After-Build Cleaning Is Different

A standard domestic clean won't cut it after building work. You're dealing with:

  • – Fine construction dust that spreads throughout the entire property
  • – Cement, plaster, and grout residue on surfaces and floors
  • – Paint splatter on windows, floors, and fittings
  • – Silicone residue around new fixtures
  • – Adhesive from flooring or tiles

These require specialist products, tools, and — most importantly — time. A thorough after-build clean of an average 3-bed property typically takes 6–10 hours.

The Complete Post-Build Checklist

Throughout the property

  • Remove all builder's dust from every surface
  • Vacuum all floors before mopping
  • Wipe skirting boards, door frames, and architraves
  • Clean all light switches and sockets
  • Remove paint splatter from floors, glass, and fittings
  • Clean all window glass (inside and out)
  • Wipe window frames and sills

Kitchen

  • Deep clean all worktops and cabinets
  • Clean inside and outside all appliances
  • Degrease hob and extractor
  • Clean sink and taps (remove mortar/grout residue)
  • Wipe inside all cupboards and drawers

Bathrooms

  • Remove grout haze from tiles
  • Clean all sanitaryware (bath, toilet, sink, shower)
  • Remove sealant residue from surfaces
  • Descale taps and shower fittings
  • Clean mirrors and glass panels
  • Wipe all tiles to a streak-free finish

Floors

  • Remove adhesive residue from hard floors
  • Deep clean carpets (or pre-clean before professional fitting)
  • Remove paint spots and plaster drips
  • Buff and polish hard floors if required

Tips Before the Cleaners Arrive

  • Ensure all tradespeople have finished and removed their materials
  • Dispose of large debris and rubble — we're cleaners, not waste removal
  • Make sure water and electricity are connected
  • Provide access to all rooms including storage areas
